Summer ROC Program

Description

The University Of Chicago Department Of Medicine currently has a Summer Research Seminar for five qualified Under Represented Minority college students (URMs) from Chicago area colleges. The program spans eight weeks, and the students will receive a stipend of $3000 to defer costs of participating. These students will attend a series of didactic lectures taught by leading faculty on basic research skills, fundamental skills on preparing for a career in academics, and also the practical skills of applying for financial aid. The students will be HIPPA trained and then introduced to multiple clinical settings including attending rounds with our Internal Medicine housestaff, morning report and outpatient clinical settings.

This heavily research based program pair each student with a research mentor who will host the student in their lab and promote active participation in ongoing research. Research mentors span the fields of clinical, translational and basic science research. Students will participate in an end of summer poster session designed to highlight their work.

In summary, this program offers significant opportunities 1) to establish a mentorship relationship, 2) to acquire research based skills, and expose students to clinical settings in a structured learning environment.
